Garden Build Update 5: Family Cottage Garden

23 May 2014

It is late May and the young family from Northampton have their beautiful new garden to enjoy, just in time for the summer.

The owners have done an impressive job of getting the build done despite their lack of previous landscaping experience and they are very happy with the finished product. As I explain in the portfolio listing for this scheme, the family wanted as much material to be re-used as possible. With almost all the hard landscaping being constructed from material recycled from elsewhere in the garden and by doing nearly all the labour themselves they have massively cut down costs.

This garden is a good lesson in how with clever design a small and difficult area can be turned into an attractive, multi-functional space, that feels cosy yet deceptively large. In addition, by employing me as their professional garden designer, yet doing the construction work themselves, they have found that they can have a fantastic garden which successfully caters for all their requirements, yet all well within their budget.

All newly built gardens improve with age as the trees and shrubs mature, so I hopefully, if the garden owners will allow it, I may be able to add some further update pictures in due course.

The garden is featured in my portfolio under Small Cottage Garden for a Young Family.
